Ormond Beach PAL's 2011 Science on Patrol After School Tutoring Class at Ormond Beach Middle School Comes to an End

By: Belinda Legut

Science on Patrol (SOP) enjoyed another fantastic year during the 2011 twelve week session at Ormond Beach Middle School. Recent remodeling provided for new lab tables and the advantage of using new equipment. Returning for the third year, we were fortunate to have the same instructor and coordinator contributing their knowledge and experience. You might say we have the program down to a “Science” now.

Ormond Beach Police Department’s Crime Scene investigator, Amy Laabs, assisted in instruction on lifting latent prints/fingerprinting, crime scene investigation, and also participated in Parent’s Day. OBMS administrators and several parents were also present to view first-hand what the students had learned. Students set up work stations and demonstrated their favorite program of classes of instruction to everyone there.

Our goal was to increase self-esteem, enhance self-confidence, and improve academic skills in youth attending the SOP classes through the use of forensic science and the scientific methods of investigations. In achieving our goal, students also learned about forensics and how important solving crime is to the Ormond Beach Police Department!
